The Hcg Diet for Vegetarians

At first glance, a vegetarian Hcg diet might appear to be impossible, but it indeed isn't. With some minor alterations to the usual diet protocol, most vegetarians can enjoy weight loss similar to others participating in the Hcg diet, either you're using Hcg drops or injections.

The former Hcg diet protocol calls for 7 ounces of protein sources daily. The commonly allowed protein sources are beef, veal, chicken, and fish (including crab, crayfish, lobster, shrimp and any fresh white-fleshed fish). This should contribute practically 40 grams of protein per day.

Flounder

Most vegetarians get the bulk of their protein from sources like rice, beans, wheat and nuts. Unfortunately, these foods aren't allowed on the Hcg diet due to their high starch content. So how can you modify the protocol so you get the permissible estimate of protein? It depends in part on what type of vegetarian you are.

Pescetarians avoid meat, poultry, and all other animal flesh except fish. If you're a pescetarian, you shouldn't have too much trouble, since the Hcg diet allows a fairly wide collection of fish. Simeons explicitly allowed crab, crayfish, lobster, and shrimp - all favorites of fish-lovers. He also allowed fresh white-fleshed fish, a kind that's somewhat open to interpretation. Among others, white fleshed fish comprise Atlantic cod, flounder, halibut, snapper, sole, and striped bass. Of course, pescetarians can also try any of the options in the next two groups, as well.

Lacto-ovo-vegetarians are the group most habitancy think of when they think of vegetarians. This type of vegetarian eats no animal flesh at all (including no fish), but they typically do eat eggs and/or dairy products. Luckily, some dairy products are allowed as protein substitutions on the Hcg diet. Fat-free milk, fat-free cottage cheese, and egg whites are all allowed and contribute enough protein. You can also try soy patties and protein shakes. These foods may yield slower weight loss, often about half what you would commonly expect from the Hcg diet - which is still quite good compared to most diets.

Vegan eaters take vegetarianism one step further and eat no animal products at all - no eggs, no dairy products, and no food containing animal-derived ingredients (such as gelatin). Unfortunately, vegans probably won't do well on the Hcg diet. Pretty much your only source of protein will be soy. We have also heard of hemp or pea protein powders, but haven't seen proof that they work. Without enough protein - or with protein from high-starch or unproven sources - your weight loss will likely be disappointing.

All Hcg dieters, but especially vegetarians, can advantage from a vitamin supplement, although it is not commonly required. B-12, potassium, and magnesium are all good supplements, and iron is especially good for vegetarians who might not be getting as much protein. In addition, vegetarians should always make sure they're drinking fullness of water.
